Dutch startup iwell lands €27M to scale smart batteries across Europe’s most strained power markets
1 May 2025

Dutch energy startup iwell has raised €27 million to expand into Germany and the UK, two countries where strained power grids are increasingly colliding with rising electricity demand. The funding round is led by infrastructure investor Meridiam, with backing from Invest-NL and Rabobank.
The timing is no accident. Across Europe, electric vehicles, heat pumps, and rooftop solar are pushing grids to their limits. In Germany and the UK, businesses often face long delays or outright limits when trying to connect new facilities. Energy capacity, once taken for granted, has become a bottleneck.
iwell’s pitch is straightforward but powerful. Its intelligent battery systems store electricity when demand is low and release it when demand spikes. For companies, that means lower energy bills and fewer grid headaches. For the wider system, it eases pressure without waiting years for new infrastructure.
Invest-NL sees the technology as a building block for more flexible, future-ready energy systems. The appeal is practical rather than ideological. Businesses can grow without being stalled by outdated grids.
iwell already operates across the Netherlands and has established a base in Düsseldorf to serve Germany. UK operations are set to launch in April 2025. Demand is rising fast. The company’s project pipeline now exceeds €100 million, driven by interest from logistics centers, manufacturers, and commercial real estate owners. Its batteries pair easily with solar installations, squeezing more value out of clean power generated on site.
Meridiam points to behind-the-meter storage as a rare win-win. It delivers immediate cost savings while strengthening long-term resilience, a crucial advantage in volatile energy markets.
The road ahead is not frictionless. Regulations vary by country, policies shift, and competition is intensifying. Still, iwell’s software-driven approach, fresh capital, and sharp focus on grid pain points give it momentum.
As Europe scrambles to modernize its energy backbone, iwell’s expansion feels well timed. Localized battery storage is no longer a niche idea. It is fast becoming part of the grid’s future, and iwell intends to be right at the center of it.
