TenneT and Alliander test AI tools to manage renewables as EU weighs safeguards for real-time grid control
30 May 2025

Europe’s power grid is entering a decisive new phase, and generative AI is moving from buzzword to backbone.
With backing from the European Commission, grid operators, technology firms, and regulators are testing how AI can reshape the way electricity flows across the continent. The aim is simple but urgent: make the grid faster, smarter, and resilient enough to handle a surge in renewables and electrification.
That urgency was on full display at the recent GenerativeAI4EU workshop, which brought together more than 250 energy leaders. The mood was less speculative than practical. Europe’s grid was built for predictability. Wind and solar are anything but. Bridging that gap now defines the challenge.
Transmission and distribution operators such as TenneT and Alliander are exploring how generative AI could recommend real-time changes to grid configuration. Instead of relying on long planning cycles, AI systems could simulate countless scenarios on demand, helping operators rebalance loads or reroute power before problems cascade.
The promise is speed with intelligence. Tasks that once took weeks could be compressed into minutes, turning raw data into immediate operational choices. For grid operators juggling volatile supply and rising demand, that shift could be transformative.
Still, enthusiasm is tempered by caution. Power grids are critical infrastructure, and unchecked AI introduces new risks. Regulators are closely examining how to enforce transparency, cybersecurity, and accountability as these systems mature.
Major technology firms are already positioning themselves. Capgemini is helping utilities design secure AI environments, while Microsoft’s cloud platforms provide the computing muscle needed to run complex models at scale. Trust, not novelty, is becoming the key selling point.
What is taking shape is more than a digital upgrade. It is a rethink of how Europe manages energy in real time. If generative AI delivers on its early promise, it may quietly become the nervous system of a cleaner, more flexible grid. The shift is underway, and Europe’s energy future may hinge on how fast intelligence can travel across the wires.
