IPP Greenvolt brings a 99.8MW/288.6MWh battery online in Hungary, setting a national record and signaling wider European grid ambitions
17 Jun 2026

IPP Greenvolt brought its 99.8MW/288.6MWh battery energy storage system into commercial operation in Hungary on 11 June 2026, making it the largest facility of its kind the country has recorded. The project adds dispatchable capacity to a Central European grid under growing pressure to accommodate variable renewable generation.
At close to 100MW of instantaneous output, the system can deliver 288.6MWh of stored energy to the network on demand. Grid operators across the region have been seeking precisely this kind of flexible asset as renewable penetration rises and conventional baseload becomes harder to justify on economic grounds alone.
Beyond Hungary, IPP Greenvolt is advancing storage pipelines across Italy, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Spain. Each market presents distinct conditions: France relies heavily on nuclear baseload, while Spain has seen rapid growth in solar generation. A simultaneous push across all six countries reflects confidence in sustained regulatory and commercial demand for utility-scale storage throughout the continent.
For energy-intensive businesses, large-format deployments tend to support more stable wholesale prices and improve the reliability of supply. Consumers can benefit indirectly through reduced curtailment of renewables and lower balancing costs that eventually feed into network tariffs. Owners of storage assets at this scale also gain access to ancillary services markets, where fast response to frequency deviations generates additional revenue.
With Hungary now home to a flagship installation, the competitive dynamics of grid-scale storage in Central and Western Europe look set to shift materially before the decade closes.
